Handsome, robust, kind, loyal, confident, smart, affectionate, jovial, intuitive, protective, brave... where have they been hiding, these mysterious farm dogs of a bygone age?
Though Scottish collies are rare, thanks to the efforts of the Scottish Collie Preservation Society, breeders around the globe (including many kennel club breeders) are diligently working to perpetuate and safeguard this unique farm dog for future generations to enjoy. For centuries collies were not so much a breed as a type and the Scottish collie type originated in and around the rugged farm country of Scotland. Modern day Rough Collies are the direct descendants of these Scottish farm dogs. As the modern world advanced and the need for working dogs such as these declined, inevitably time and fashion changed the Rough Collie into the conformation dog as we know it today. Diminished but not forgotten, a concerted effort has been undertaken by Scottish Collie enthusiasts worldwide to revert to the original Rough Collie breed standards of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in an effort to restore the original character and appearance of the traditional Scottish Collie. 
Since the goal of Scottish Collie breeders is to bolster the most desirable attributes of this original type farm collie and still keep the essence and unique good looks of the classic Rough Collie, an invaluable tool has been genetic testing (along with incorporating selected appendix registered dogs), the purpose being to resuscitate and diversify the current gene pool in an effort to benefit the character, health and longevity of the breed.
